Chapter 23: The Wedding Night

The last truck left the farmyard at midnight, and Roe locked the front door behind us.

The house was warm.

He had banked the parlor fire before the ceremony, and the quilts lay turned down on the bed.

Snow ticked softly on the glass.

I stood in the middle of the room in my green dress with my cane in one hand and the ring on its leather cord at my throat.

"Don't touch me yet," I said.

Roe stopped in the doorway.

"I want to look at you first," I said. "In the suit."

He stood still and let me.

The suit coat strained across his shoulders.

His tie was loose.

A bit of straw clung to his hair, over one ear.

He looked like a farmer who had been dressed by someone who loved him.

"Take off the coat."

He took it off and hung it on the chair.

"The tie."

He pulled it through his collar in one long slow slide.

"The shirt. Slowly."

He undid the buttons one by one, never looking away from me, and the white cloth fell open over his chest.

My mouth went dry.

We had made love a dozen different ways in two months.

I had never watched him undress for me in a lit room, as if I had all night.

I did have all night.

"Now me," I said.

He crossed the floor and stood in front of me, and I put the cane against the wall.

He found the zipper at the side of the green dress and drew it down.
