Chapter 20: Locker Room
"Ten minutes," Axel told the woman with the clipboard.
"Mr. Dahl, the owner is waiting."
"Ten minutes."
He took my hand, and we walked into the home locker room.
It was empty.
The team was still on the ice, singing, and we could hear the arena through the concrete walls, a deep roar.
The room smelled of sweat and tape and liniment, and a long row of green stalls ran along the wall with jerseys hanging above them.
His stall was at the end.
It had his name on a brass plate and a captain's C on a hook.
He dropped his stick.
He stood in front of me in full gear, still wet, steam rising off his shoulders.
His jersey clung to his chest.
With no hair to catch it, the sweat ran straight down his scalp and into his beard.
His eyes were enormous.
"You said it," he said. "At the glass."
"I know."
"Say it out loud."
"Not yet," I said. "Take your gear off."
"All of it?"
"Slowly. I'm going to watch."
He grinned.
It was the first full, unguarded grin I had seen on his face in three years.
He sat on the bench and unlaced his skates, one at a time, and set them side by side.
He peeled off his socks.
He stood.
He took the jersey over his head, and the elbow pads, and the shoulder pads, and let each one drop on the bench.
Underneath he wore a wet black compression shirt that clung to every ridge of muscle.
"Off," I said.
He peeled that too.
I stood with my back against the locker next to his, and I let myself look.
He was magnificent.
Sweat ran in rivers down his chest and over the compass tattoo.
