Chapter 20: Victor Strikes Back
I reached the lobby as the detective in the tan coat closed the cuffs on Alec's wrists.
Four uniformed officers stood around him.
A photographer stood outside the glass doors with his camera already up.
Alec did not fight.
He stood with his weight off his bad leg and his chin level, looking at the floor.
"This is wrong," I said. "He was shot last night saving my friend."
"Miss Marceau," said the detective, not unkindly. "We have a warrant."
"For what?"
"The death of an auditor in New Jersey, three years ago."
"We received a tip with a name and an address this morning."
The tip had been sent at eight forty-five.
The board meeting had started at nine.
Victor had not waited to see whether he lost the room.
He had called the police while I was still walking to the table.
"I did it," Alec said.
I turned.
He met my eyes, steady and grey.
"Don't argue with them, Portia. I did it. I told you I would say so."
