Chapter 9: Write My Vows
Spencer got out of the car and shut the door softly.
He crossed the gravel with his hands in his coat pockets and stopped at a friendly distance.
"Hey," he said. "I'm not here to fight."
"Then why are you here?" Elliot said.
"To talk to Margot. Alone, if you don't mind." Spencer smiled at his brother. "Ten minutes, El."
Elliot did not move.
I touched his sleeve.
"It's all right," I said. "Wait inside."
"Margot."
"Please."
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he went back into the yard office and left the door open a hand's width, and the light from it lay across the gravel.
Spencer watched him go.
"He's always been protective," he said. "It's sweet. Annoying, but sweet."
"What do you want, Spencer?"
"I want to apologize." He took one hand from his pocket and rubbed the back of his neck. "I handled the toast badly. It was Lacey's night, and I was thinking about her, and I didn't think about how it sounded to you."
It was the first sincere thing he had said to me in a week.
I held onto the bandage on my palm.
"You looked at me three times at dinner," I said.
"Did I?"
"When your great-aunt asked about the song. You didn't say it."
"It's just a private thing." He shrugged. "Lacey and I have our own stuff."
"You asked me for that song every night for two years."
"I asked whoever was in the room for it." He laughed a little. "Come on. You think I knew who was humming? I was in the dark, Margot. Everyone's a voice."
