Nils didn't say anything else.

He didn't call.

He didn't text Erik.

For two weeks, his radio show ran with a substitute host, and his name stayed off the air.

Dag's didn't.

Dag was on every station in the state that February.

The custody petition, the tragic family, the grandfather who only wanted his granddaughter safe.

And Alumni Night.

Saturday, February 13th.

Dag Haugland, number 4, the first Two Harbors boy to win a championship.

His banner was going up into the rafters before the puck dropped.

Erik had to be on the ice for it.

The whole team did.

"I could fake a groin," he said the night before, lying on his back on his bed with his arm over his eyes.

"You'd have to fake it for the cameras."

"I'm a great actor."

"You're the worst actor in Minnesota," I said. "You cried at a pudding commercial on Tuesday."

"It was a sad pudding."

So he went.

So did I.

The arena held eighteen thousand people.

It was full.

Erik had gotten me a seat in the first row behind the Voyageurs' bench, where he could see me from the ice.

I sat there in his old hoodie with my phone on a video call.
