Chapter 17: Vellora
The city of Vellora was waiting for us at the gate.
I had expected to come home in chains of a sort, with guards on both sides and the street empty.
Instead the street was full.
Bakers stood in their doorways with flour to the elbow.
Women leaned from upper windows, and children ran alongside the horses shouting my name.
"The emerald princess!" a boy yelled. "She sold her necklace for the soldiers!"
"Lucia!" someone else called. "Lucia of the Naming!"
Somebody threw a handful of yellow flowers, and they bounced off the helmet of the guard riding beside me.
The guard went red and looked straight ahead.
"They know," Tobin said wonderingly, riding at my left. "How do they know?"
"Wagon drivers," I said. "Soldiers. Gossip. Everyone who ever ate Greywatch flour."
Corradin rode on my other side with a guard at his bridle.
He looked at the crowd.
"They do not cheer for a prince," he said.
"Give it a week, Highness," Pia said behind us. "They might cheer you too."
