Chapter 21: The Release

Caelen's POV

I waited outside my father's door, pacing the stone floor until the silence grew unbearable.

I had walked Wynne to it myself.

She'd asked me to stay in the corridor, and I'd said yes, though every part of me wanted to put my shoulder through the wood.

The nurse stood beside me with her wet sleeves, saying nothing.

When the door opened, Wynne came out slowly and shut it behind her.

Her eyes were red.

She walked straight into my chest, and I held her.

"What did he say?" I asked into her hair.

"He said I looked tired."

"That sounds like him."

"He said he'd been waiting thirty years for someone to tell him no." She laughed unsteadily. "I told him he looked terrible."

"And?"

"He liked it." She pulled back and wiped her face. "He wants you. Go in."

"Wynne."

"Go."

I went in.

My father lay with his head turned toward the window.

The light had gone orange, and the mountains were black against it.

He looked smaller than he had that morning.

"Sit," said the Alpha King.

I sat on the edge of the chair.

"She asked me what I'd done to your mother," he said. "The first thing she asked. Not about the throne. About your mother."

"What did you tell her?"

"The truth. That I loved her late and badly, and that I kept her in the Luna's chair because the law said she couldn't leave it."

I hadn't known that.

I had been told for twenty years that my parents had been fond and quiet and dull.
