Chapter 20: The Green Notebook

Harlan's wolves caught Ilsa at the Black Fir bridge before dawn.

She had got that far on foot, with her camel coat torn at the hem and the green notebook still tight under her arm.

By noon she stood in the middle of Highmoor's great hall, and she was smiling.

I sat on the dais beside Caelen with a borrowed blanket around my shoulders and the burns on my wrists wrapped in clean gauze.

The council filled the benches.

The Crown's wolves lined the walls, and the Cold Harbor wolves sat in a tight, silent knot at the west end.

Ilsa's father stood in front of them, with his hands behind his back.

"My daughter has been seized like a thief," he said to the old woman in the center chair. "I ask by what right."

"By the right of the Moon Wolf, whom she helped to chain," said the old woman.

"That is a lie."

"Then let the notebook speak."

Maud stepped out of the shadow by the hearth, with her cardigan sleeves hanging past her fingers.

In one hand she held the green notebook.

Ilsa's smile stayed where it was, but her eyes went to it and did not leave.

"It was taken off her at the bridge," Maud said. "I haven't read it yet. I thought we'd read it together."

"That's private," Ilsa said lightly. "It's a diary. Everyone knows I keep one."

"Then you'll not mind."

Maud opened it, and the pages rustled.

"November third," she read. "Sheep, nine. Buy silver slugs from the Cold Harbor foundry. Use the east pasture, near the orchard cottage, where I can say I saw from the window."

She turned a leaf.

"November tenth. White hair for the fence. Dane says Wynne's own is best, so keep what comes off the brush."

The hall had gone completely silent.

Maud reached into the back of the notebook, into a little paper pocket, and drew out a pale braid of hair no longer than her finger.
