Chapter 19: Hands Raised

I stood on the Stone as a wolf, and nobody in the meadow moved.

I was white from nose to tail, and taller at the shoulder than any of the Ashfall Alphas had ever been.

The silver was gone from my wrists, and the pain with it.

Moonlight lay on my back.

Ilsa's father stood a long way off now, grey in the face, with his Cold Harbor wolves drawn back around him.

The old woman in the shawl had fallen to her knees at the edge of the circle, with her burned hands held out in front of her.

She was whispering the same word over and over, and it was not a chant anymore.

Dane tried to sit up on the bier.

He couldn't.

I walked to him slowly, claws clicking on the granite, and put my forefoot on the edge of the blanket.

He looked up at me with a face that had no color left in it.

"Wyn," he said.

I didn't answer, because I couldn't.

"Wyn, listen. We can fix this. The pack needs a strong Alpha, and I can still be one if you'd only..."

He stopped.

I was not growling.

I was looking at him, and he knew what he saw.

"Please," he said. "One minute."

Behind me, boots came up onto the Stone.

I knew them by their sound.

Caelen crossed the line of torches, where the circle had been, and stopped three paces off.

He didn't reach for me.

He took off his coat and laid it on the granite, and then he stood with his hands at his sides and let me choose.

I let the wolf go.

It was easier than I'd thought.

The cold came, and the stars, and then I was a woman on my knees on the Stone, with the silver burns from the chain healing on my wrists.

Caelen put his coat over my shoulders.

I stood up in it.

Two hundred Ashfall wolves stared at me, and the baker had both hands pressed over her mouth.
