Chapter 9: The Walk-In

Mickey didn't look at the kid.

He kept polishing the glass in his hand, slow, the way he'd polish it on any night.

Two hotel guests at the end of the bar were arguing about the Bears.

"Not here," Mickey said quietly. "Dry storage. Two minutes."

The barback went.

Mickey poured the hotel guests another round, wiped the bar, and followed.

Dry storage was a narrow room behind the service well, shelves of syrups and cases of tonic.

The barback was sitting on a case of lemons with his hands between his knees.

He looked about fifteen.

"Tell me," Mickey said.

"It came up on the well printer at 12:14," the kid said. "Negroni, lemon, VIP lounge. Her login. Kelli's."

"You're sure it was her login?"

"It prints the name at the top. And she was standing right there when it came up. Like she was waiting for it."

"What did you think?"

"I thought it was Mr. Nunzio's. It's always his. Negroni, lemon, crushed ice, that's his drink."

He swallowed.

"I've made him a hundred of them. I didn't even think."

"And then?"

"I made it. She took it off the rail."

"And she didn't go out to the lounge, Mickey. She went out the back door. Into the service corridor."

The corridor ran behind the main bar to the lounge's side door.

It was the long way around.

Nobody took the long way around with a drink going warm.

"How long till she came out the other side?"

"I don't know. A minute? Two?"

The kid's voice cracked.

"Then everybody was screaming and the Don was on the floor, and she was pointing at you. And I didn't say anything."
