He was halfway across the lawn when I caught him.
The grass was soaked, and my boots were sinking, and he walked.
"Adamo."
He stopped.
He didn't turn around.
"I'm not angry," he said. "I'd like you to know that. I'm just"
"Stupid."
"I was going to say embarrassed."
"Both."
He turned then.
His jaw was set, and his eyes were bright in a way that was not entirely about pride.
"I've been trying to get my family's lanes back for eight months," he said. "It's all I know how to say. Alliance."
"I had a ring in my pocket, if you want to know."
I stared at him.
"It was my grandmother's. I had it in my jacket the whole time, and I thought, this is how it's done."
"You say the deal and then you show her the thing."
"That's the worst plan I've ever heard."
"I know."
"You had a ring and you proposed to the Table."
