Chapter 13: Not My Signature
The loan officer at the Marlow Credit Union opened the file at nine sharp.
Nathan sat on one side of her desk and Bowen on the other, still wearing yesterday's jeans.
Behind the glass, six customers pretended not to watch.
"This came in Monday afternoon," the loan officer said. "Mrs. Sorensen brought it herself. She said her husband was at work and had signed it that morning."
She turned the form around.
Bowen looked at his own name.
It sat at the bottom of the page in blue ink, big and leaning right.
"That's not mine," he said.
"It looks like yours."
"I sign small. I sign like I'm paying a fine." His mouth went flat. "She's never once watched me sign anything."
Nathan pulled the form closer.
He had read ten thousand signatures at his window, and he knew what a copied one looked like.
"Look at the W," he said. "The pen stops and lifts at the top. Then it starts again. Nobody signing their own name stops in the middle of it."
"She traced it," the loan officer said slowly.
"She traced it off something. The license, probably."
Nathan took out his phone and held up the photo he had taken at the counter on Valentine's Day.
On the screen, Bowen's real signature was small, tight and clenched.
The loan officer laid the two side by side.
Nothing about them matched except the letters.
"I'm freezing the loan," she said. "And I'm calling the branch manager. Mr. Sorensen, you'll need to sign an affidavit of forgery."
"Gladly."
