Chapter 14: Two Men Before Him

The man from Dayton sat in a plastic chair in the ER family room with his right hand in a cast.

He was about thirty, thin, with a farmer's tan that had faded for the winter.

When Bowen came in, he stood up too fast and then didn't seem to know why.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I drove two hours. I almost didn't come."

"Sit down," Dell said. "Tell them what you told me."

He sat.

Nathan took the chair by the door, and Bowen stayed on his feet.

"Britt and I were together for two years," the man said. "She moved into my place. We were going to buy a truck for my landscaping work."

"A truck," Bowen said.

"She said the title had to be in both names for the loan. I signed where she pointed. Next thing I know, the truck is sold, the money is gone and she's telling people it was a dare."

"A dare?"

"She dared me to sign. I did it laughing. That's what she told everybody later, that I'd signed a gift to her as a game and couldn't take a loss."

Bowen's jaw worked.

"Why didn't you go to the police?"

"I did. The sergeant asked if I had a text saying no." The man held up the cast. "I haven't been able to afford much since. I fell off a roof last week because I took a job I shouldn't have."

Nathan felt a cold weight settle in his stomach.

"You said there was someone before you," Dell said.

"A widower. An older guy over in Hale County. She was his home aide. She married him on a Friday and he signed half his farm over to her the next spring." The man shook his head. "He died in July, and she sold it in August."

"How do you know?" Nathan said.
