Chapter 15: The Rule in the Shower
That night the water ran upstairs for a long time.
Nathan sat on the bottom step with a cold mug of tea and tried to read the credit union's affidavit copy.
He read the same line four times.
At last he went up with a clean towel.
The bathroom door stood open a hand's width, with steam rolling out of it.
Nathan knocked on the frame.
"I brought you a towel."
"Come in," Bowen said.
He pushed the door wide and held the curtain back with one arm.
Bowen stood under the spray with his head down and his forearm braced on the tile.
Water ran over his shoulders and down the long scar on his ribs.
Nathan forgot the towel.
Bowen turned off the water and stepped half out of the stall.
He was dripping on the mat, naked, huge and not hiding any of it.
"I need to tell you something," he said. "And you're going to be mad."
"I'm not going to be mad."
"I love you."
Nathan's hands closed on the towel.
"Bowen."
"I know the rule. I'm sorry. I stood under there for ten minutes trying to keep it behind my teeth, and I can't." Bowen's voice was low and rough. "I loved you the first Thursday. I loved you in that garage today. I'm not going to wait for a judge to say it."
"You broke our rule."
"I did."
"The one thing I asked."
"Yes."
Nathan dropped the towel on the sink.
He took one step in and put his hand flat on Bowen's wet chest.
"Then you don't get to be sorry," he said. "You get to be punished."
Bowen's eyes went dark.
"Good," he said.
Nathan pushed him back against the tiled wall, and the curtain swung.
He kissed him with his shirt soaking through, and Bowen's hands were on his back, his hips and the front of his jeans before the kiss was even over.
