Chapter 16: The Witness Who Wasn't There
Nathan took the page out of Bowen's hand and read it under the porch light.
It was one sheet, printed small.
At the bottom, Bowen waived any claim to his father's farmhouse and forty acres if the marriage ended before a full year.
Beneath that sat the notary's stamp and Bowen's name.
"I never saw this," Bowen said. "I only meant to sign the county form that day."
"Mr. Sorensen signed it on the fourteenth," Britt said sweetly. "In front of everyone. You were there, Nathan."
"I was at the window."
"Then you saw."
Nathan did not look at her.
He looked at the notary, a stooped man with an honest face who was holding his leather case in both hands.
"Sir. Did Bowen appear in front of you on the fourteenth?"
The man blinked.
"Mrs. Sorensen brought it to my office on the twentieth. It was already signed."
"Then you didn't watch him sign."
"I, well." The man glanced at Britt. "She said it was the same thing."
"A notary has to watch the signer sign it. That's the whole job."
The notary's ears went red.
"Honey," Britt said to him, with her teeth showing. "Stamp it."
"It's stamped. I'm afraid that was a mistake." He took the page back from Bowen's fingers, folded it in half and put it in his pocket. "I'll be reporting my own stamp to the county tomorrow. Good evening."
He walked down the porch steps.
Britt stood alone in her pink coat on Nathan's porch while two neighbors' curtains moved across the street.
