Chapter 9: What Was in the Folder

Bowen Sorensen waited until Britt's car had backed out of the farmhouse driveway on Friday afternoon.

Then he stood in the kitchen of his dead father's house and did something he had never done to a friend.

He went through her things.

Nathan had made him promise, at the kitchen table in Pruitt Lane, with Bowen's hands still shaking.

"Don't ask her yet," Nathan had said. "Don't say a word. If she knows you've worked it out, she'll have a story ready before you finish the sentence."

"I can't just act normal."

"You have for a month."

That had landed.

Bowen had gone quiet and then nodded.

Now he climbed the stairs to the room that had been his father's.

Britt had taken it over ten days ago, with a lock on the inside of the door that she had asked Bowen to install.

The lock was open today.

She had gone to work in a hurry.

The room smelled of her vanilla perfume.

The bed was made with the corners tucked, and her tote bag sat on the dresser with the zipper half open.

Bowen stood in front of it with his hands at his sides.

He thought about Nathan's face when he'd said, "I would never have hurt you."

He opened the bag.

There was a wallet, a lip balm, and a folder.

It was a plain blue folder, thick with paper.

Bowen opened it.

The first sheet was a county plat map of his father's farm.

Forty acres, Route 9, with the creek on the east side.

His own name was typed in the corner as owner.

The second sheet was a letter on a developer's letterhead.

"Dear Mr. Sorensen. We are prepared to offer six hundred and forty thousand dollars for the property. Please note that a homestead release signed by the owner's spouse is required to close."

Bowen read it twice.

He had received that letter in December.
