Chapter 18: The Invoice

Dom stood in the doorway in his robe and looked at his brother-in-law.

I watched his back from the stairs.

I'd have given a year of my life to see his face.

"My wife sits beside me," Dom said. "Front pew. Where else would she sit?"

"Of course." Augie nodded. "And the talk?"

"Any talk with my wife, you have with me."

"Dommy." Augie said it so gently. "There's no rule anymore. You took it off the table yourself. So it's not a vote. It's just a talk." He looked up at me again. "Between family."

The two old men behind him didn't look at me at all.

"I'll be there, Augie," I said from the stairs. "I'll wear black."

He smiled.

"Black suits you too, sweetheart."

Dom shut the door.

He stood with his hand flat on it for a long moment.

Then he turned around, and his face was exactly the same as it had been with Augie on the step.

Calm. Sad. A grieving father.

He held it all the way up the stairs to me.

When he reached the top, it came off, and what was under it scared me more than Augie had.
