The corridor went dead quiet.
The woman from the county paper had her pen on the page and wasn't writing.
The DA looked at Margit.
"Mrs. Hollenbeck," he said. "I'd advise you to wait for your attorney."
"I don't need an attorney to tell the truth," Margit said.
She said it to the reporter.
"I'd had wine at a party. I took the boat out with the children. I didn't see the skiff. My son put that boy in my seat to protect me."
She touched her pearls.
"He's carried it for nine years. Whatever he said last night, drunk, he was protecting his mother. He always has."
Greta stood up.
The paper cup crumpled in her hand.
Lukas put his fingers on her wrist, very lightly.
She didn't say anything.
Margit turned at last and looked at her down the corridor.
There was nothing in her face at all.
By noon it was on every channel in Green Bay.
Greta watched it on her phone at the yard, sitting on the hood of the truck in dry clothes.
