Chapter 17: The Petition

Ge Zhenyuan wrote the first line a dozen times before he got the word for north right.

He left off the extra stroke every time now.

It had taken Wenxuan one evening to teach him and years of habit to fight.

He stared at the correct character on the page.

The guard had brought a stub of ink, a cracked brush and a roll of coarse paper from the archives.

The cell was cold.

His mouth still tasted of the champion's anger, and his hands still remembered a slight body held up against the wall.

It had been the best hour of his life, and he had earned none of it.

His hand was steady, as it always was before a battle, and that was the strangest thing about it.

He did not know how to write this.

He knew how to write a dispatch.

Forces at the pass, so many.

Grain, so much.

Casualties, listed.

He had never written a line that was meant to hurt him.

To the Emperor, he began.

I, Ge Zhenyuan, Marshal of the North, ask Your Majesty to annul my marriage to Champion Jing Wenxuan.
