Chapter 7: The Garage

I caught Colin on level P3 of the parking garage at ten past six, alone, beside his black Audi.

He was scrolling on his phone, and when he saw me he did not look surprised.

"There she is. Mrs. Shaw."

"You copied my model."

"I improved your model," he said, and slid the phone into his pocket. "There's a difference, and the board knows it."

"Joyce has the log. 1:12 in the morning, from your login."

"Joyce is fifty-eight and writes her passwords on a sticky note."

"That's not an answer."

"It's not a question." He stepped closer, smiling. "Let me walk you through it, since you like numbers."

He ticked it off on his fingers, slowly, like he was reading me a menu.

"One. Say I did it. Say it's all true. You walk upstairs and tell your husband."

"Yes."

"Two. He fires me, because you asked."

My mouth had gone dry.

"Three. In an hour the whole building knows the CEO's new wife had her ex fired in her first week."

"It's in the elevators, and it's on Honoria's desk by dinner."

He tipped his head.

"You'll be the gold digger who used her husband. Everybody already thinks it."

"That's not what would happen."

"Then call him," Colin said gently. "Go on. I'll wait."

I didn't move.

I could hear a car ramp somewhere above us, rubber squealing on concrete.

He knew exactly what he'd done, and that I knew it too.

"I'm presenting Heron to the board on Friday the sixth," he said.

"My name on every slide. And you know the best part, Claire?"

"You're going to sit in the back row and clap."

He reached out and tucked a bit of my hair behind my ear, light as dust.

I smacked his hand away so hard it echoed.

He just laughed, and got in his car.

I told Truman at eight, in the kitchen, because term four, and because I couldn't make my hands stop.

He listened without moving.
