Chapter 15: The Fitting

Freja's POV

The dress shop was on a quiet street, behind a window full of veils.

I had never been inside a bridal salon.

I stood on the carpet in my good coat and felt like a spy.

"You came," Marianne said.

She was standing on a little round platform in the middle of the room, wearing a gown the color of cream.

Two seamstresses knelt at her hem with pins in their mouths.

"You asked," I said.

"I did." She smiled at the mirror. "Come and sit. Leave your coat on if you like. I'd like to make a plan with someone who isn't my father."

June had come with me.

She took the velvet chair next to mine and whispered, "That is a lot of tulle."

Marianne waited until the seamstresses had finished and stepped out, and the shop door had clicked shut behind them.

She turned from the mirror and her face dropped the bride.

"Rhett moved the wedding," she said. "You know that."

"I know."

"It's the night of the Gathering, after the Reading, in the Seven's own hall. He told my father it would be a show of strength. A new Alpha marrying into the Aaltonen line in front of every pack in the city."

"And it gives you no time to ask questions," I said.

"None at all. He wants me in a white dress with three hundred wolves watching before anyone has a chance to think." She stepped down from the platform, holding up her skirt. "So I've decided to ask my question first."

"Which is?"

"I'm going to end it. Not in a note and not quietly. At the altar, out loud."
