Chapter 25: The Bridge
The siren was still screaming when I hit the street.
Lights were coming on all down the creek.
Porch lights. Flashlights bobbing out of doors.
Nobody ran.
Two hundred people came out of their houses in the middle of the night in coats over their nightclothes, and nobody ran.
The cook was in the diner door with her legal pad, shouting names.
"Church cellar. Kids and anybody over eighty. Go."
"I'm eighty-one," the old woman with the kettle said.
"Then go."
"I'm not going."
The cook looked at her for one second and wrote something down.
"Fine. Stand by me."
My mother came out of the cook's house with Abner on her arm.
He was dressed now, in somebody's old canvas coat that didn't close over his chest.
"I called the sheriff," the cook told me as I passed. "Forty miles. He'll be here by dawn or I'll have his badge."
I had the dish tub under my arm.
The cook's grey plastic dish tub.
Everything I had was in it.
We went down the street to the bridge.
It crossed the river at the top of town, under the rusting arm of the tipple, one lane of old iron and planks.
