Chapter 26: Carried
The blast never reached me.
Something hit me from the left and something hit me from the right, at the same time, hard.
Not the silver.
Them.
Deacon came in front of me with his arms wide.
Bowie came in front of me a half step behind him, shoulder to shoulder.
I heard the shot go into them.
That wet, ugly sound again.
Deacon rocked back into me and didn't fall.
Bowie grunted.
Then I felt it through the bond.
Silver, burning in both of them at once.
"No," I said. "No, no, no."
Arlis was already breaking the gun open for the second barrel.
He'd walked up onto the bridge behind the Elder, and he was close now, twenty yards.
Bowie went.
I don't know how.
He had four pellets in his side, and he went down the planks.
He hit Arlis around the waist before the barrel came up.
They went down together on the frosted boards.
The shotgun skidded away and spun to a stop against the iron rail.
Arlis's white shirt tore open from the collar.
Something bright jumped out of it.
