Chapter 27: Judgment
The Elder didn't argue.
He looked at the ring in his palm for a long moment.
Then he turned around to the trucks.
"You heard the Alpha," he called. "Every wolf of the Lovett pack. On the bridge."
They came.
The ones in jackets left their shotguns in the truck beds.
The ones who'd shifted came on four feet and sat down at the edges with their ears flat.
Sixty wolves filled the far half of the bridge.
Two hundred people from Graylick filled the near half.
In the middle, on the frost, there were the four of us, and the Elder, and Arlis.
The defectors hauled him up onto his knees.
His moustache had blood in it.
He looked at me, and for the first time since the Moon Supper he didn't bother to smile.
"A gutter handler," he said. "A grill cook from a rogue den. That's who you'll hang me on."
"No," Abner said. "Not on her."
He looked back at the crowd in the road.
"Bring him."
The crowd opened again.
The split-eared man came through it with a rogue on each side of him.
