Chapter 19: Nine Seconds

I read the memo until the paper went soft at the crease.

I didn't need to read it again to know what it was.

The porch boards creaked. Brand sat down beside me in his jeans with his feet bare.

He didn't ask. He just looked at the page in my lap.

Then at the name at the bottom.

"She sent them in there," he said.

"She sent them in there and then she sent flowers."

He put his arm round me. I let my head fall on his shoulder.

"What do you want to do with it?" he said.

"Walk into the Tower and read it out in her lobby."

"And then?"

"Then she says it's forged. Haven says the shield's fine, it's been fine for eleven years. And her collars come down the highway."

"Probably."

"And we don't have a dome yet."

He was quiet.

"So we build it first," he said. "And we keep that safe."

Sable photographed every page that afternoon.

She sealed copies in tins and gave them to three traders she trusted, going three different ways.

"If anything happens to the Tarrants," she told each of them, "open it in the market square and read it out loud."
