Chapter 23: Back Pew
"You can come," I told my mother. "You sit in the back pew, and you don't speak."
She nodded.
She did not argue, and that was how I knew how much had changed.
Saturday morning Saint Brendan's was full by nine thirty.
Three hundred people had come, because three hundred invitations had gone out, and not one person had dared to stay home.
I watched them from the vestry door.
Every face I had seen laughing at the Grand Aldine sat in a pew, in good clothes, looking at their shoes.
"They're terrified," Beatrice murmured.
"Good."
"You're enjoying this."
"A little."
My aunt put her arm through mine.
She wore a plum suit, and her gray hair was brushed back.
"Your father should have walked you," she said. "I'm a poor second."
"You're not second."
"I'll do my best not to trip."
The organ started.
The doors at the end of the aisle swung open, and three hundred heads turned.
I walked down the aisle on Beatrice's arm in a simple ivory dress, with a bouquet of white ranunculus, and I looked at no one but the man at the altar.
Ethan was not in a uniform.
He wore a charcoal suit, and he stood with his hands folded, very straight.
When he saw me, his whole face broke open.
I heard the whisper start behind me.
That's the guard. That's the girl.
I kept walking.
At the front, Beatrice kissed my cheek and put my hand in his.
"Take care of her," she said.
"I will."
"I wasn't asking."
A ripple of laughter ran through the pews, and this time it was warm.
The priest was a soft old man with a hearing aid.
