Chapter 13: What Rosamund Wrote
Hadrian read the diary at the kitchen table until the last candle was a stub.
I sat across from him and did not touch the bread Betsy had left out.
He turned each page with two fingers, the way he handled seals.
"Here," he said at last, and pushed the book to me.
The entry was dated three years back, in the same round hand as the letter.
"I threw a candlestick at a footman today. He ducked. Good."
"Nobody audits a monster. Nobody asks what a woman with a terrible temper does with her afternoons."
"Father signs, the Prince sneers, the court looks away, and my silver goes into the barn a bag at a time."
I read it twice.
"She did it on purpose," I said.
"The slapping, the screaming, all of it."
"It was a cloak."
Hadrian was quiet for a long time.
"I read her temper for seven years," he said.
"I wrote it into reports. I never once asked what it was covering."
