Chapter 26: The Cold Road

Torin crossed the ring in front of two hundred wolves and stopped ten feet from his brother's widow.

"I promised her," he said. "That's true."

His voice was rough, and it carried.

"The night of my brother's wake she asked me to stand by her, whatever came. I said I would. I woke up in the guest room nine hours later with nothing in my head."

Margo opened her mouth.

"She told me in the morning that I'd been ill, and that we had grieved together. I let her cry on me for fourteen months." Torin turned to face the pack. "I never asked myself why I couldn't remember."

"He's lying to save himself," said Margo, and her voice rose. "Look at him. He's let her turn him into a dog."

"Dessa," I said.

Dessa had the ledger open before I finished the name.

She read the line from the wake in her flat clinic voice, every word of it: the brown bottle, the nine hours, he believes it.

The courtyard went so quiet I could hear the torches hiss in the sleet.

"That is her handwriting," said the old elder from the steps. "She signed my minute book for ten years."

"There's another page," Dessa said. "A list of names and dates."

She read the first.

A woman near the front of the ring went grey, and put her hand into her coat.

She pulled out a small tin, and held it up in the torchlight.

"She gave me this in the spring," the woman said. "For my cold hands. I lost the pup at eleven weeks and she brought me soup."

"Mine too," said a voice from the back.

Margo turned in a slow circle, looking for a face that would still take her side.

There wasn't one.

"You're a poisoner," I said, from where I stood by the Stone. "You rubbed my death into my hands every week and called it kindness. I thanked you for it."
