Chapter 21: C-Rank
The hall had gone completely silent.
Sabine walked the length of the floor in her College coat, past our father in his chains, past our mother, past me.
She didn't look at any of us.
"Alone," the old man said. "What does that mean, girl?"
"It means she's not in the room." Sabine's voice shook but held. "Send my sister out of the building. Put the stone in front of me, and let me stand on it where everyone can see."
The Crown's observers glanced at each other.
One of them nodded to the clerk, who went out to the Command truck and came back with a travelling pulse stone in a padded case.
Teague carried the other end.
They set it on the dais boards, and it hummed.
"Linnea," Hollis said quietly. "She may be trying something."
"I know."
"Then I'll go with you to the yard."
"No." I stood up. "Stay and watch her hands. I'll go to the road."
I walked out of the doors, down the steps and across the gravel, past the trucks, all the way to the pack gate.
I stopped where I could not see the hall windows and sat on the low wall.
A thin pale moon stood over the ridge.
I waited with my arms around my knees.
A long time later, Teague came running across the gravel.
"Done," he said. "You can come back."
"And?"
"Come and hear her say it."
When I came back through the doors, the whole pack was on its feet and no one spoke.
Sabine stood on the stone with her hands at her sides.
The clerk's voice carried to the last row.
"C-Rank. No trace of S."
Sabine nodded.
"Say it to them," the old man told her, not unkindly.
