Chapter 20: Stripped
Linnea's POV
I was angry at Hollis in the morning, as promised.
He took it standing in the Keep kitchen with his coffee going cold, and when I was finished he said, "You're right," and nothing else.
It's hard to stay furious at a man who agrees with every word.
By noon we were in the Founders' hall.
The same hall where my father had given away my tuition was packed to the doors, and the benches were full of the people who had watched me walk out.
Six Council elders sat on the dais, with the old man with the cane in the middle chair.
The Crown's observers sat to one side in gray, with their pens ready.
My father stood on the floor in the same chains, with a guard at each elbow.
My mother stood beside him, pale, with her pearl earrings gone.
I sat on the front bench with Hollis on my right and Teague on my left.
Sabine's chair, three seats down, was empty.
Nobody had found her.
I told myself I would think about it later.
The old man rapped his cane on the boards.
"The Brask pack Council is in session," he said. "The charge against Alpha Osric Brask and Luna Hedda Brask is use of a forbidden rite upon a child of the pack, for gain."
"For the family's good," my father said.
"Silence. You'll be heard."
He opened the ledger on the lectern.
He read out the pack dues that had gone to a College for a girl's gowns.
He read out what Hedda had sold, the names of the children, the bottles the Command's lab had tested.
He did not raise his voice, and every wolf in the hall could hear him.
"The Luna's tonic recipe," he said at last, and a scribe stood and read it.
