Chapter 19: Hollis's POV

Hollis's POV

The Founders' hall was lit with a hundred candles.

I stood in the dark of the side vestibule, behind a door open two inches, and watched Linnea cross the floor alone.

I had promised her I would stay out of sight.

I had not promised her I would be the only man in the building.

An hour before, Teague had put the Council's elder and two scribes in the room behind the dais, with the door cracked and a recording stone on the table.

I had not told Linnea.

She would have said no, and she would have been right to want a say, and I would have done it anyway.

I had decided to take that fight with her afterward.

Hedda Brask sat at the long head table in a gray silk dress, her honey-colored hair in a soft knot.

There was a tea tray in front of her with two cups.

She looked up as Linnea approached, and her whole face softened.

"Darling. You came."

"I came for Sabine's apology," Linnea said. "Where is it?"

"Sit. Please."

Linnea stayed standing.

"You look tired," Hedda said.

The mark on my wrist went warm, and I kept my hand still.

"I haven't been sleeping badly," Linnea said. "Funny. I used to be exhausted every morning after the moon."

Hedda's smile did not move.

"I've been unfair to you," she said. "I see that now. Your father and I have been in a very dark place, and we've blamed you for it."

"Go on."

"Let me make it right." She slid a folded paper across the table. "The house. Your grandmother's land, the garage, everything. It's yours, in your name, free and clear. We'll go to the coast."

Linnea picked it up.

I could see her read it, and I could see her find nothing wrong with it.
