Chapter 6: The Stronger Alpha

Lucan stood in the doorway with his canvas jacket still dusty from the road.

He'd come straight from the bridge.

He was tall enough that he had to duck under the lintel. His dark beard was three weeks longer than when he left. His pale gold eyes went from me, to the blood on my shirt, to Bowen's hand on the clipboard.

He didn't raise his voice again.

He didn't have to.

His Alpha rolled through the hallway.

The young healer dropped to one knee.

The man mopping the floor went down on both.

Evangeline's legs folded under her and she sat down hard on the tile.

And Bowen.

Bowen Ironwood, Alpha of the Ironwood Pack, felt his knees bend.

I watched him fight it.

His jaw shook. The cords in his neck stood out. His eyes flickered amber, then brown, then amber.

He got one knee back up.

The other stayed bent.

Lucan walked past him.

He took the clipboard out of Bowen's hand. He didn't grab it. He just took it.

He signed it.

Lucan Draven. Father.

He handed it to the healer.

"Go. Now."

She ran.

Then he turned to me.

His hands came up to my face, very gently. His thumbs brushed the tears I didn't know were on my cheeks.

"Are you hurt?"

"No. It's his. It's Asher's blood."

"Tell me."

"Cats. She put him in a crate with cats."

Something moved behind his eyes.
