I picked up the carrier.
"What are you doing?" Jenna said. "Put me down. I live on East 73rd Street."
"Your owner just left in handcuffs," I said. "You're a stray."
Ben's sister drove us back to Clinton Street in the clinic van.
The pit bull man rode in the back with a bag of ice on his shoulder.
He told the pigeon boy about the tackle four times.
Nobody talked about the will.
Nobody talked about the million dollars.
Ben sat in the front seat with the carrier on his knees and didn't say anything at all.
At the clinic his sister made up a kennel on the bottom row, across from the tabby.
She put the kitten in it and latched the door.
"Not that one," she said, pointing at the top kennel. "She's got enough going on."
Then she hugged me hard, and hugged Ben harder, and took everyone else home.
