Chapter 31: In the Same Lot

I stood in the cabin doorway with my shirt on inside out and said, "I told you. When and where I say."

"We only booked it," Mae called up from the truck. "You can cancel."

I looked back at Rhett, who was buttoning his jeans and trying not to smile.

"Where would you say?" he asked.

I thought about it.

I thought about the lot on Kettle Road, the torn banner, the gravel where he had knelt.

"The lot," I said. "Sundown. Same spot."

Pia punched the roof of the truck.

"I'm telling you, she was always going to say the lot," she said. "Pay up, Mae."

"I didn't bet against it," Mae said. "I only said she'd make us suffer first."

The next evening the lot filled from the gate to the road.

Bikes stood in rows with their chrome catching the low gold light, and every rider in the county had come in a clean shirt.

Pia had strung lights across the porch rail where the banner used to hang.

Mae stood on an upturned beer crate in her green cardigan with a printed certificate in her hand, because it turned out she had been ordained online for eleven years.

"I've done six funerals and two weddings in this lot," she said. "Don't look at me like that."

My father sat in the back row in a borrowed tie.

Dahlia sat beside him with a new haircut and her arm out of the sling.

They had not spoken a word to each other, and he was passing her a handkerchief.

I walked down the aisle between the bikes by myself.

I wore a plain white dress that Pia had found at a secondhand shop in Spokane Valley, and Gran's boots, and my old leather jacket.

The scar on my left palm showed on the bouquet of wild lupine Mae had picked.

Nobody gave me away.

Two hundred men watched me go by, and I heard the quiet way they breathed.

Rhett stood at the end of the aisle in a black suit that fit him badly across the shoulders.
