Chapter 23: Lemon Drops

We went up in the freight elevator, because it was the closest.

I wore Lucas's dress shirt over the damp slip, and he wore trousers and no socks.

The fourth floor was dark and smelled of paint and old carpet.

At the end of the hall, a door stood open a hand's width.

Ingrid had left a note taped to the frame in her small upright writing.

He should not have to open it alone. I.

Lucas read it twice.

"I locked it myself," he said.

"I was thirteen, and I took the key with me.

"I've kept it on my key ring for eighteen years."

"Do you have it now?"

"It's in the penthouse."

"Then she picked the lock," I said.

"She's sixty-nine."

"She's a Gorski."

He almost laughed.

Then he pushed the door open with two fingers and went in ahead of me.

The sitting room was untouched.

A fat sofa sat under a dust sheet, and the television was a boxy old model.

A glass ashtray sat on the table, which his father must have used.

Lucas stood in the middle of the carpet and didn't move.

I took his hand.

"The nanny slept there," he said, nodding to a small door.

"This was mine."

He opened the door on the opposite side.

It was a small room with a single bed, a desk, and a shelf with a row of paperbacks gone yellow.

The bed was made with a plaid blanket, and the dust lay on it.

I walked in behind him.
