Chapter 25: Page Nine

Lorcan's POV

The hearing room had a long oak table and eight chairs, and none of them were meant to be comfortable.

I had sat on the other side of that table twice, as a fellow, to vote on other people.

Now I sat alone on the near side with a glass of water I wasn't going to drink.

It was ten o'clock on Friday morning.

The board chair sat at the center with the retired attending's legal pad open in front of him, photocopied, with the shaky capitals.

To his left was a cardiac surgeon I had trained beside, who had not looked at me since I came in.

To his right was the hospital's counsel, and four other members, and a recorder.

"Dr. Hartigan," the chair said. "You have read the statement."

"I wrote the email that put it on your desk."

"Then say what you want the board to know."

I had practiced it in the car with Moss listening.

It came out shorter than I had planned.

"Nine years ago I stood in an operating room and told an attending that a clamp technique was wrong. He told me to hold the retractor. I held it."

Nobody moved.

"A woman died. Two weeks later I sat in front of this board's predecessor and said I had no concerns. That was a lie. I have known it was a lie every day since."

The surgeon on the chair's left finally looked at me.

"Why say it now?" he asked.

"Because her daughter is my patient."

"That's the other matter." He turned a page. "A relationship with a patient, begun before her surgery. Our policy is not vague, Lorcan."

"No. It isn't."

"You understand that either of these ends a career."

"I do."

"Then I don't see what you are asking for."

"Nothing," I said. "I'm telling you what happened. You decide the rest."

He put the page down.

"Then I think we're done with questions, and we can deliberate," he said.
