By first light there were eleven barges tied along Penhal's landing, and three hundred men in gray standing on it.
They had come ashore in the dark and made no move on the path.
They stood in ranks on the stones below the market.
On the hill across the river, a line of riders sat their horses against the sky.
The old Lady of the North had kept her word.
Her riders had come in the night and were watching, as I'd asked.
On the road below them sat twenty more riders in red, under a blue banner with a stag on it.
The Lord of the West March had come to watch the prince's property change hands.
Erwan stood beside me at the top of the path with his bow.
He hadn't slept either.
"They want to talk," he said. "Their captain's been standing at the bottom of the path since dawn."
"Then I'll go down."
"Then I'll go with you."
"Then so will I," said Katell, behind us.
