Chapter 10: What Keaton Said in the Lobby

Emmett's POV

I let the phone ring itself out, and Jessamine watched me do it.

"You can take it," she said. She had the sheet pulled to her collarbone and her hair across my pillow.

"I'd rather not."

It rang again.

"It's his third time," I said. "He'll keep going."

She turned her face into my shoulder. "Then answer it, and put it on speaker, and I'll be quiet."

I picked it up.

"Stroud."

"I know she's there," Keaton said. He sounded drunk, or past it. "I'm in your lobby. Come down alone."

Jessamine shook her head slowly, but her eyes said she'd already lost the argument.

"I'll be five minutes," I told him.

I dressed in the dark and kissed her forehead.

"Don't follow me out," I said.

"That's my line."

"Then say it back to me later."

She smiled with her eyes shut. I took the stairs down.

Keaton Hallam sat on the leather couch under the hotel's fake palm with his tie loose and his hands hanging between his knees.

I had read him for two years.

He had charm, a good smile and no spine, and I had never once wanted to hurt him.

Tonight I wanted it very much.

"Sit," he said.

"I'll stand."

He nodded.

"She read it out loud to eighty people," he said. "Section four. I didn't even know what it said."

"You signed it."

"I was twenty-two. My mother was already getting confused." He rubbed his face. "She put the papers in front of me, and she said, sign where I put the tabs, Keaton, and I did."
