Chapter 15: Statement
Hank read the lawyer's letter at the kitchen table with his mouth open.
"They want to sue me for filming," he said. "In a house with thirty witnesses."
"They want to scare you," Nate said.
"It's working."
"Don't sign anything. I mean it."
"I wasn't going to sign anything!" Hank said. "I was going to hide under my bed."
Jesse had been staring at the last line of the page.
"They don't need us," he said. "They need the swimmer to stay quiet."
Hank looked up. "What?"
"The lanyard guy.
"He said in the hearing that Pierce told him it was a joke.
"If he says it again to the police, in writing, none of this letter matters."
"He's scared," Nate said. "His father will not be."
"Whose father?"
"Pierce's. He'll go to him first."
"Then we get there first," Jesse said.
Nate looked at him for a long moment.
"You're not going alone."
"I know. I want you at the back of the library, on the other side of a shelf, in case."
"In case what?"
"In case he's too afraid to talk with you in the room."
Nate's mouth twitched. "I can be on the other side of a shelf."
