Chapter 20: In Her Name

Andras stepped through the glass wall and was gone.

The whole city glittered where he'd been.

Royce stood there holding the chair.

He looked at his hands. Then at me.

"Get out," he said. His voice had gone thin and high, an old man's. "Get out of my house."

"Happy to," I said.

We rode down forty floors without a word.

Lacey drove us home in the red hatchback with the hounds panting in the back.

I sat in the front. Malphas sat behind me, folded up like a lawn chair.

"Dorrie," he said, at the first red light.

"Not in front of Lacey."

"I'm fine," Lacey said. "Go ahead. I love this. I've got nothing on TV."

"Lacey."

"Driving. I'm driving. I'm a driver."

At the green door, she hugged me hard and said into my ear, "He was going to give himself away for you. That's a point. That's also a very stupid point."

"I know."

"Text me in the morning or I'm calling the police on a demon."

Upstairs, I didn't take my coat off.

Malphas stood in the kitchen doorway.

"Say it," he said.

"You decided for me."

"Yes."

"On the roof, you wouldn't touch me until you knew I'd chosen. You stopped. You said you wouldn't have me wondering which of us decided. Remember?"

"I remember."

"And then tonight you went to the man who burned your last house and tried to sell this one. With all of them in it. With me. Without asking."
