Chapter 12: Look at Them

Rosalia's POV

Gemma Colombo slept in her father's house with two guards at her bedroom door and a lamp left burning.

She slept at three in the morning, and the lamp did not help.

I stepped into her dream and found a dining room full of balloons.

It was a birthday party, with paper streamers, a cake with five candles, and a banner that said Happy Birthday.

The sound of a record player came from somewhere. Everything was bright and silly and slightly too loud.

Gemma stood in the middle of it in her white dress, laughing.

She was holding a glass of wine, and she was telling the story of the test to a room full of guests.

"And then I said to them," she said, "she is so perfect it is suffocating."

The guests laughed.

They were all the people from the castle table, and every one of them had my father's face.

I walked up to her and took the glass out of her hand.

It did not break. It simply stopped being there.

"Gemma," I said.

She turned.

She smiled at first, because it was her party. Then she saw the dress I was wearing, and the hole in it.

The laugh went out of her mouth.

"You," she said. "You are dead."

"I am."
