Chapter 18: What Greta Knew
Anders drove the Volvo.
I kept one hand on the dash and the other on his knee.
Neither of us said a word for twenty minutes.
The cardiac floor smelled of floor wax and weak coffee.
A doctor with tired eyes met us in the hall outside the double doors.
"She had a heart episode in the garden," she said. "The gardener found her under the roses."
"She's awake. She's stable. She is also asking for her lipstick, and I have refused."
"How bad?" I asked.
She looked at Anders, who was staring at the wall.
"The heart is failing slowly," she said. "She knows. She has known for a year."
"Months?" I said.
"She's seventy-nine, with an old pump and a lot of will. Months, with luck. Maybe more."
Anders turned and put his palm flat against the wall.
He still hadn't said anything.
I took the doctor's elbow and walked her three steps away.
"Can she have visitors? Both of us?"
