I didn't go at once.

I stood in the shed under the work lamp with the keys in my fist and thought about what I wanted.

Not what Greta had told me to make him pay, and not what the town would say.

I thought about it.

I went through it from the beginning, one wire at a time.

He had paid.

He'd paid at a microphone and in a boardroom, in front of people who could have ruined him.

He had never once told me what I owed him for it.

I wanted him.

It was that simple, and I found I wasn't afraid of it.

I turned off the lamp and took the gardener's pickup, and I was on Lake of the Isles by eleven.

The boathouse lights were on.

Anders sat at the end of the dock in his overcoat, elbows on his knees.

He held his father's steel watch in his palm.

He heard the truck and didn't turn around.

"It's five to midnight," he said.

"I know what time it is."

He stood up slowly.

"Tilly."

"I have terms."

"Yes."

"Don't touch me until I say. Not the hair, not my hand. Nothing."

He put both hands into his coat pockets.

"Agreed."

I walked past him into the boathouse.
