Chapter 22: Blue Again
Anders met me at the cardiac ward doors at ten past eight, and he was already running.
"The night nurse called," he said. "A woman in a blue coat signed the visitor log as Mrs. Anders Engdahl."
"She texted me from a new number."
"How long ago?"
"Forty minutes."
We went down the corridor side by side, past the nurses' station, the vending machines, the sleeping families in plastic chairs.
Blair stood at the door of Greta's room with her hand on the frame.
She had put on the pale Engdahl blue again, a long knit coat the exact shade of my gown.
It looked like something she had bought the day after the Ball and kept in a bag.
Her black hair was brushed to a shine, and her red lipstick was fresh.
She turned and smiled at us.
"Hello, husband," she said. "Hello, Til."
"You aren't allowed in there," Anders said.
"The nurse let me in. I'm family."
"You are no relation to anyone in this building."
"I'm a woman who knows the whole of a man's heart," Blair said, gently. "I could post it tonight."
