Chapter 17: Self-Defense
The district attorney was a tired woman in a gray suit, and she had cleared her Saturday for us.
Her office was on the second floor of the courthouse.
She sat behind a desk covered in files, with the sheriff on one side and the coroner on the other.
Lorne held my hand under the edge of the table.
"Mrs. Penhallow," she said. "I've read your statement twice."
"Before I tell you what I'm going to do, I need you to watch something."
"Dina Palfrey's phone was seized at the arrest."
"Her cloud login opened a second camera feed on Rory Penhallow's account, in your living room."
I went cold all over.
"You have the night?"
"All of it."
"I'll watch," I said.
"Lyddie," Lorne said.
"I want to see what a jury sees."
The sheriff dimmed the lights.
The picture was black and white, shot from the top of the bookshelf.
There was my kitchen table with the candles.
