Josiah's POV
I parked the Tahoe at the curb in front of the bike shop at ten past midnight and cut the engine.
I could see her window from there, third floor, one lamp on.
I had one rule I had kept for ten years.
I did not touch another man's wife.
At twelve years old I watched a man stand in a church door with a face I still see when I close my eyes.
I had promised that face I would never put it on anyone.
Then I spent five weeks in the bed of a woman the State of Tennessee said belonged to somebody else.
She had told me the paper was torn.
I had wanted it to be torn so badly that I had never once asked to see the paper.
The wind took the souvenir.
Sevier County kept the rest.
Around one, her window went up a few inches, and the sound of the old upright came down the three floors to the street.
She played a chord, and another, and then she sang.
She sang an A.
