Chapter 6: Fogged Glass

The county had a lockdown count on Friday, and for the first time in four sessions I was alone with him.

The guard had been called away at a quarter past ten.

He said "two minutes" and shut the door, and the heater in the ceiling began to tick.

It was the third-floor interview room, the same steel table, the same barred window onto the corridor.

The glass in the window had fogged, and the corridor beyond it had gone to a gray smear.

Nobody could see in.

I stood with my back to the bars.

Kostas stood up slowly from his chair.

He did not come toward me.

He stayed on his side of the table with his hands open at his sides.

"You know," he said.

"I know that the jacket had a darned cuff," I said. "I know whose stitch it was."

"Yes."

"Is that all you're going to say?"

"There are two minutes," he said. "I will not spend them on that."

My heart was going hard.

I had the folder against my chest like a shield, and I knew it for what it was.

"I'm your evaluator," I said.

"You are," he said.

"I can't be in a room with you like this."

"Then go and stand at the door and call the guard."

I looked at the door.

I did not go.

He saw that.

His eyes moved over my face slowly and without hurry, and I felt it like a hand.

"Let me say it," he said. "I cannot do anything else, so let me say it."

"Mr. Drakos," I said.

"If I were not in this jumpsuit," he said, in his flat, quiet voice, "and you were not holding that pen, I would take that folder out of your hands and put it on the floor."
