Chapter 18: Bidding
"Winston," I said. "Winston Wardell."
"He called me himself," my boss said. "Very polite. He wants to come by tomorrow at two and make the offer in person."
"Tell him yes," I said. "Two o'clock. In the lobby. And tell him I'll have an offer too."
On Tuesday at 1:50, the whole crew was in the Lock & Key lobby, pretending to work.
Dakota was refilling the hint-card rack, one card at a time.
The machinist sat by the lockers, reading a newspaper upside down.
My boss sat behind the front desk with her travel mug in both hands.
Pierson wasn't there. I'd asked him not to be.
"It's my offer," I'd told him. "If you're in the room, it's yours."
At two exactly, the front door opened.
Winston came in wearing a new quarter-zip, cream this time, and sunglasses he didn't take off.
There was a man behind him in a suit, carrying a leather folder.
"Afternoon," Winston said to the room.
He saw me by the hint-card rack and smiled.
"Rhi. Heard you might be here."
"I work here."
"For now," he said.
The man in the suit put the folder on the front desk and opened it toward my boss.
