Chapter 20: Staying

He didn't argue.

He nodded once, slowly.

"Okay," he said.

"Don't say okay like that."

"Like what?"

"Like you're leaving."

He laughed under his breath, and the red light caught the gray at his temples.

"I asked because I wanted to know," he said. "Not because I needed a yes. You said no. Now I know."

"And?"

"And now I have to think."

He didn't tell me what he was thinking for three days.

I didn't ask. I had a business to buy.

The sale papers took one lawyer, my boss's nephew, and four afternoons at her kitchen table eating lemon cookies.

The crew started the real work on Wednesday.

The theater kid tore out every wire in the lobby and put it back in a way that wouldn't kill anybody.

The machinist fixed the roof over the back room with a ladder and a lot of swearing.

The bucket was retired with honors. Dakota put a little sign on it.

Mom came on her one night off with a crockpot and a pack of trash bags and cleaned the bathrooms.

The kid sorted screws. He'd started to like it.
