Chapter 5: The Fitting
I carried everything I owned to the bridal shop on Thayer Street in one duffel bag and a garment sleeve.
The garment sleeve held my grey suit. It was the only thing my father had forgotten to take.
Gemma met me at the door in a coat with the collar turned up.
"You look like a man who was thrown out," she said.
"I was thrown out. At eleven last night, by my own brother, with a flashlight."
"Good. Then you'll fit the story." She took the duffel out of my hand. "Come and sit down. I have forty minutes before the next appointment, and you have a job."
"What's the job?"
"Look pleased."
The shop was long and white, with a velvet bench along one wall and a dozen gowns on a rail.
The owner was a small woman with pins in her sleeve and no patience for anyone's nerves. She had known Gemma's family for years.
"The Ferrante girl, back again," she said. "Is it the same dress, or are we starting over?"
"A different dress," Gemma said. "And a different groom."
The owner looked at me, then at the duffel, then at Gemma.
"Well," she said. "Sit, sit. I'll bring the ivory."
I sat on the velvet bench and watched a stranger measure the woman I was about to marry.
Gemma came out of the changing room in a column of satin with the back open and the sleeves long.
She stood on the little round platform and looked at me in the mirror.
"Well?" she said.
I had practiced nothing for this. I said the first plain thing I thought.
